Q:
Is there a minimum I must give? Is there a maximum?
A:

If you choose to contribute through ongoing payroll deduction, there is a minimum contribution of $1 per pay period, which is $26 per year. If you make a one-time payroll deduction, the minimum contribution the system will take is also $1.

How quickly will changes to my deduction take effect?
A:

Any changes you make to your active deductions will take effect the following pay period from the day you make your change.

How do I sign up?
A:

Q:
How much of my money goes to the non-profit organization?
A:

One hundred percent of your charitable gift! The company covers all administrative costs associated with SEGN. That means 100 percent of your money goes to the charity of your choice.

Q:
Can I give to more than one organization?
A:

Yes! You can give to one or more nonprofit organizations. Keep in mind, there is a maximum of 10 active pledges.

Q:
If I decide to donate to the local adivisory council fund, who are the employees who decide how these funds are allocated?
A:

Advisors are employee volunteers elected by SEGN members for two-year terms. You can view a full list of local advisory council members in each region.

Q:
Can I add my organization if it’s not on the current list?
A:

Yes! You can add your own organization as long as it’s eligible. Eligible organizations are those that have received tax-exempt status by the IRS.

To add a new organization, you’ll will need this: legal name, Federal Tax ID number, contact person, email address, address and phone number. Learn more about how to add your charity to the system.

Q:
Can I designate a specific program or fund at my charity?
A:

Yes. SEGN allows you to designate a fundraiser event, program or fund within a charity. Once you’ve chosen a charity, you’ll have a chance to type in a gift designation. You may designate a specific department within a college, for instance, or a specific event for which an organization is raising funds, such as Relay for Life.

Q:
Will my payroll deduction donations be matched?
A:

They can be if your donation is to organizations that qualify for that program. The Sempra Energy Foundation offers a match for contributions to educational, arts or cultural organizations. You must complete a Matching Gifts Program form for each period you want matched. You may request a match quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Please visit the Matching Gifts program page for more information.

Are contributions I make to non-profit organizations through SEGN tax deductible?
A:

Yes. All of your charitable contributions through payroll deduction are tax deductible.

Q:
How can I keep track of my year-to-date contributions?
A:

You can always review your active pledges by logging in to the Employee Giving Platform. This will show you your personal giving history, including your active and inactive pledges.

To view your past donations, navigate to the Donation History page (click ‘Give’ at the top of the page, then click ‘Donation History’ on the navigation bar). Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the ‘Donation History’ section. This section represents all donations that have already been processed out to the organization. Here, you can use the dropdown menu to change the dates you would like to see.

Q:
Where can I find out my total contributions for the year when I am filing my tax return each year?
A:

Look at the last paycheck of the year for which you’re filing taxes. It will show your itemized year-to-date contributions. Because it’s the last paycheck of the year, it will show your total contribution for that year.

Q:
How do I report my charitable contributions through SEGN in my tax return?
A:

If you made a contribution through payroll deduction in any given year, your gift was made through SEGN and is tax-deductible if you itemize deductions on your personal income-tax return, subject to IRS restrictions, of course.

Please note that you only have to list SEGN on your tax return (rather than listing each group to which you donated through payroll deduction).

The IRS Tax ID for the Sempra Employee Giving Network is 71-087546. If your contributions totaled $5,000 or more in any given year, please note that SEGN is required to provide your name and the total amount of your gift to the IRS.

Can I make a one-time donation without affecting my ongoing payroll deductions?
A:

Yes, you can make a one-time donation to the same charity without affecting your ongoing payroll deductions.

Q:
Can my donation be anonymous?
A:

Yes. You’ll still have the advantage of receiving tax deductions, but the charity won’t know your identity. When you make a pledge, you have the option of checking the "anonymous" box.

Q:
Will the charity know the amount of my gift?
A:

Reports go to each organization listing each employee and the amount given that quarter by that employee. This allows charities to individually thank donors for their gifts. This information is shared only with the charities. When you select "anonymous," however, it simply says "anonymous" and lists the amount donated.

Will SEGN accept checks?
A:

SEGN can’t accept check contributions. To make a one-time contribution, we invite you to sign up for a one-time payroll deduction. Sign up to donate now.

Q:
Is the Sempra Employee Giving Network the same organization as Energy for Others? Did active pledges carry over when the name changed?
A:

Yes. In 2008, Energy for Others legally changed its name to the Sempra Employee Giving Network, but it’s the same organization. Please note that this name change didn’t affect active pledges, because it was only a name change.

Q:
Who is eligible to take part in the Sempra Employee Giving Network?
A:

All U.S.-based employees within the Sempra Energy family of companies may take part in this program. This includes Sempra Energy employees who are on employment contracts or interns. Please note: ACT1 contracted employees, or employees working for another contracted vendor, can’t take part in SEGN.

Q:
When I make a donation through payroll deduction, is my contact information shared with the recipient organization so they are able to contact me directly?
A:

No, when you make a contribution through payroll deduction, we only provide the recipient organization your name, company, amount donated that quarter and the designation of your contribution as entered by you in the system. If you choose to give anonymously (which you can select when you make your pledge), we provide all the information listed above except your name; the donation is listed as “Anonymous.” No contact information is provided to the recipient organizations.

Q:
I can’t find a charity I’m looking for. What do I do?
A:

Try narrowing your search. Click the magnifying button on the right side of the navigation bar to go to the search page. Then, use the search bar and filters to narrow your search by EIN, keyword or location. Make sure to remove all punctuation and abbreviations when you type in the name of the charity you are looking for.

If you still can’t find the charity, click the ‘Help’ link at the top right of the page, then click ‘Suggest an Org’. Fill out the form and our Customer Advocates will help locate the organization for you, provide steps on how to have the organization added or provide you with the reason for the organization’s ineligibility to be added.
